Christmas Events in London: Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is set in the heart of London and is one of the city's most vibrant open spaces. Home to Nelson's Column, the square is steeped in history and provides a superb backdrop for performances and events.
Christmas is no different. Every year since 1947, Norway have given the people of London a Christmas tree in thanks of Britain's support during World War II. 2008 will be the 62nd year of the tradition and will mark the start of Christmas for many Londoners.
The tree is usually a Norwegian spruce (Picea abies) and is more than 20m tall and around 50 years old. Described by Norwegian foresters as 'the queen of the forest' the trees are carefully selected from the forests surrounding Oslo.
This year, the tree will be illuminated on Thursday December 4 in the early evening.
Once the famous tree has been erected, it provides the perfect backdrop for a spot of carol-singing. From Monday December 8 until Friday December 19, Trafalgar Square plays host to a number of groups performing traditional Christmas carols in the name of charity. All are welcome to watch - and perhaps even join in.
So if you are looking to visit London this Christmas, make sure you stop off at Trafalgar Square to see perhaps one of the most famous trees in the world. Take the family for a treat and enjoy some good old fashioned carol singing whilst you all sip on a cup of hot cocoa; what better way to start the festive season?
