Dirty Dancing Celebrating National Watermelon Day
Monday 4th August 2008 is going to be one of the more unusual holidays of this year. National watermelon day is an unofficial public holiday which aims to raise awareness of "the extensive health benefits of watermelon".
Unsurprisingly, watermelon day is already part of America's so-called "fruit festival calendar". Apparently many US states get heavily involved in celebrating the big tasty fruit. Some going as far as organising dedicated watermelon events like "pip-spitting contests".
Leading the way in this years UK watermelon day festivities is the Aldwych Theatre's production of Dirty Dancing. Now fans of the massively popular production will have the opportunity to re-enact the famous scene in which Baby awkwardly declares "I carried a watermelon!"
The first 20 people to carry a watermelon to the Aldwych Theatre at 10:00am on August 4th will win a pair of top-price tickets to see the show that night. Hardcore Dirty Dancing fans and watermelon enthusiasts will have to race to the theatre, prizes are strictly limited to the first 20 people to arrive with an intact fruit.
As a cheeky bonus for dedicated Show and Stay® readers here's a map between the Aldwych Theatre and the nearest potential watermelon stockist.
