Julie Andrews Honoured at National Arts Awards in New York
Dame Julie Andrews was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Prize for her contribution to both acting and music at the American National Arts Award Gala last night.
The performer behind some of the 20th Century's most iconic characters, Andrews is most famous for her screen roles in both Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music
A spokesperson for the awards had this to say yesterday: "Dame Andrews is being honoured for her profound contributions to both music and acting and for serving as a great role model and mentor for all aspiring artists. She is a champion of the literary arts and a dedicated advocate for childhood literacy."
Admired for many roles, including successful runs on Broadway for My Fair Lady and Camelot, Andrews is probably best remembered for her stand-out performance as 'Maria von Trapp' in the Sound of Music. Tender yet strong, the tale of the novice nun looking after the von Trapp family in wartime Austria has gone on to be one of the most famous and best-loved musicals of all time.
Currently playing at the London Palladium, the most recent version of The Sound of Music has received rave reviews and is a testament to Andrew's remarkable talent.
