Come Dancing Extends its run at Stratford East
The phenomenal new musical penned by ex-Kinks front-man Ray Davies has extended its booking period by another two weeks
Though it borrows the title of a Kinks' hit of 1983, this is no compilation of modish classics but a brand new collection of songs written especially for the piece.
As well as writing all the songs, and co-writing the book with Paul Sirett, Davies performs in Come Dancing as the narrator.
Set in and around the Illford Palais in the 1950s, Davies' musical recaptures a time in British history when going down to the local dance hall on a Saturday night was the undisputed highlight of every young person's week. Inspired by memories of his elder sister, this period has always intrigued Davis and has inspired some of his most poignant work.
Apparently, since Come Dancing opened in mid-September, the new musical has pulled in audience members from as far afield as the USA and Japan. Kerry Michael, artistic director for the Theatre Royal Startford East, had this to say yesterday:
"The decision to extend comes in direct response to suggestions and requests from patrons seeking to book beyond 25 October 2008 to see the show. Our audiences have so far been outstanding, and it is wonderful how Come Dancing, an original British musical set in east London, has managed to capture the imagination of not only a local audience but also the wider national and international audience as well"
With a extended booking period, Come Dancing will now play at Stratford until November 8th.
