Les Misérables is set in the Parisian underworld during the period of the French Restoration (1815 -1830).

Jean Valjean is released from prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean is determined to put his criminal past behind him but his attempts to pull himself out of the gutter are constantly threatened by his conscience. When another man is arrested in his place and threatened by the pursuit of the policeman, Javert, Valjean must decide who will be punished.
